Breaking Ground, Building the Future: A Community’s Journey to Clean Water

On June 6, 2024, Living Water Zambia held a groundbreaking ceremony at Namalombwe Primary School in Ipongo Ward, Chibombo District. This event marked the start of a piped water system project, jointly funded by ABSA Bank and Living Water International. The project is set to bring significant improvements to the school and the surrounding community.

The day was brightened by the presence of many distinguished guests: The former Provincial Minister for Central Province, the newly appointed Honorable Minister of Justice Princess Kasune, who gave a heartfelt keynote speech, the Director of Secondary Education Services at the Ministry of Education, the Director of Business Banking at ABSA Bank, the District Commissioner, the Council Chairperson, and His Royal Highness Chief Chitanda. Their participation highlighted the importance of this project and their collective dedication to bettering the lives of children and families in the community.

Namalombwe Primary School, home to 750 students from grades 1 to 7, has long struggled with limited access to water and poor sanitation facilities. The existing borehole with a hand pump has not been sufficient, leading to inadequate sanitation. This project is a crucial step towards resolving these issues and fostering a healthier, more conducive environment for learning and growth.

As the construction of the new water system begins, the project stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when communities and partners come together with a shared vision. It showcases the power of collaboration and commitment to a common goal. “Let us continue to work hand in hand to ensure that every child in our district has access to the resources they need to thrive,” encouraged Honorable Minister Princess Kasune.

The new piped water system is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024, and will benefit approximately 750 students and an additional 400 community members. By upgrading the simple borehole into a modern, reliable piped water system, the project will greatly enhance hygiene and reduce waterborne diseases, creating a healthier environment for both education and daily life. This improvement will enable the school to implement better sanitation practices, essential for the students’ well-being.

During the ceremony, Honorable Minister Princess Kasune also announced the government’s support for the initiative by planning to build an additional classroom block at the school. His Royal Highness Chief Chitanda stressed the importance of hiring trained teachers from within the community to ensure stability and continuity in the school’s staff. Reflecting on past challenges, he noted that teachers from other towns often left shortly after being assigned. “With safe water now available, it is crucial to employ teachers from within our community to ensure they remain committed and effective in their roles,” he stated.

The partnership with ABSA Bank is monumental, highlighting the benefits of collaborative efforts with corporate partners. Living Water Zambia’s initiative in this project underscores their commitment to expanding their reach and encouraging further support for such endeavors. “The financial support and belief in this project by ABSA Bank have made this day possible. This contribution goes beyond funding; it is an investment in the future of our children and our community,” the Country Director stated during his speech at the event.

This groundbreaking ceremony at Namalombwe Primary School is not just the start of a construction project; it is the beginning of a brighter future for the students and the entire community. It is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we unite with a shared purpose and dedication to improving lives.
